Consultation

Sometimes your dentist needs a second opinion as to whether or not endodontic treatment is recommended for a particular tooth. Dr. Rene Buttar has extensive training on complex dental issues such as infected teeth, cracked teeth and resorption of teeth. He often uses CBCT imaging to learn as much about the problem before giving you advice.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure that helps you retain your natural tooth when the dental pulp has become inflamed or infected. In this procedure, the dental pulp (or nerve) is cleaned and disinfected prior to being sealed with a highly biocompatible filling material. This is all done through a very small hole in the tooth using a dental operating microscope.

The dental pulp can be a very complex tissue and often becomes blocked with calcifications. These are the cases where a general dentist may refer their patient to an endodontic specialist.

Root Canal Re-treatment

Initial root canal treatment may not always result in healing. There are a number of reasons for this, but they all result in the presence of bacteria within the tooth. In these cases, the root canal treatment can be re-done to try to resolve any residual inflammation. The initial root canal filling material is removed, and the entire system is cleaned and disinfected prior to placing new root canal filling material.

Apical Micro-surgery

This minor surgery is an alternative to root canal retreatment. Instead of re-doing the root canal treatment, the damaging bacteria are removed surgically using a dental operating microscope. During this procedure, the tip of the root is removed along with any inflammatory tissue. The root end is then prepared and sealed using bio-ceramic material. This procedure avoids some of the uncertainties that can exist with re-doing root canals, and most people tolerate the procedure very well.

Dental Trauma

Injuries to the mouth can result in teeth being fractured and possibly moved out of position. These teeth can kept if the correct procedures are completed in a timely manner. This might include repositioning and splinting of teeth, and likely root canal treatment. Endodontic specialists have extensive training in dealing with such emergencies

CBCT imaging

3D imaging is used to assess things such as the presence the disease and the anatomy of the tooth in question. Its use eliminates some of the uncertainties that exist with traditional radiography.
